"The theory of economics does not furnish a body of settled conclusions immediately applicable to policy; it is a method rather than a doctrine, an apparatus of the mind, a technique of thinking which helps its possessor to draw correct conclusions." - John Maynard Keynes The goal of economics instruction at Klein Oak is to produce citizens who think clearly. We believe that instruction in and practice with the economic way of thinking is the surest way to produce clear thought. The context of our explorations is the traditional realm of economics, with an emphasis on microeconomics, including the following:
  • scarcity and the economic problem
  • supply and demand
  • market failures and the role of government
  • business organizations and market structures
  • money, banking, and the Federal Reserve
  • macroeconomic stabilization and economic growth policy
  • comparative advantage and international trade.

The Klein Independent School District offers this Advanced Placement course in microeconomics designed to prepare students to score successfully on the College Board's Advanced Placement Microeconomics exam. Consequently, this course offers a curriculum at the freshman college level of study. Students certainly find the subject matter challenging, but it's a good foretaste of what is to come for our college-bound students. The teacher recommends the course for all college-bound students. Students will use three differing texts, presenting an intriguing mix of perspectives on economics. The main text is Economics by McConnell & Brue. That text is supplemented by Dr. Paul Heyne's Microecoomics, which presents the micro topics of his landmark textbook entitled The Economic Way of Thinking. To further challenge the students to think beyond the ordinary, students read selected parts of Dr. Steven Landsburg's The Armchair Economist. Microeconomics focuses on the economic decisions of single decisionmaking units, be they high school students or multinational corporations.
